The United States appears to be nearing a military move that could become the most consequential chapter in its nearly 50-year confrontation with Iran.Yet there has been scant public discussion about what might turn into a weeks-long campaign with unpredictable consequences. There has been no coordinated push from senior national security leaders to lay out the case. President Donald Trump has made little effort to publicly explain the reasoning behind potential action or why American service members might be asked to put their lives at risk. Nor has the White House offered any clear indication that it has planned for what could follow inside Iran should its clerical leadership collapse — a development that could send shockwaves across the Middle East.
Sources told CNN that the president has not yet made a final decision.
Still, with diplomatic efforts failing to produce meaningful breakthroughs, Trump appears to be moving steadily toward a pivotal choice. According to CNN, the military has informed the White House it could be prepared to strike by the weekend after positioning additional air and naval forces. One source said the president has privately weighed both sides of the argument and sought advice from aides and allies.
Given the magnitude of the stakes — and the risks facing American personnel — the absence of a clear public justification for a potential war with Iran stands out.
That lack of clarity surfaced again during Wednesday’s White House briefing, held just before the first meeting of the president’s Board of Peace. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked directly why Trump might consider striking Iran’s nuclear program, which he has previously claimed was completely destroyed in a globe-spanning bombing campaign last year.
There are numerous reasons and arguments that could be made in favor of striking Iran,” Leavitt said, without elaborating.
